The 12th Annual BIG BAND JAM! continues to pursue its non-profit organizational mission to promote youth, jazz and education here in our Nation's Capital. The BIG BAND JAM! began over a decade ago with our peer-to-peer performance and review program. The event has gradually evolved to include an annual jazz legacy tribute and an artist-in-residency. We have contributed hundreds of free music charts to high schools and universities promoting America's greatest jazz arrangers or composers.
In 2016 we will honor saxophonist John Coltrane and our artist-in-residence will be renowned musician, educator, composer and arranger Andrew White. We will be partnering with embassies, organizations, institutions, universities and orchestras to produce our programming. Our embassy program will be a "Japanese Jazz Series" and our featured large ensembles will include the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, US Navy Commodores and the University of Maryland (Eastern Shore).
This year we will embark on our first collegiate partnership as we celebrate the musical tradition of the University of Maryland in Princess Ann on Maryland's Eastern Shore campus. Each orchestra will receive these free arrangements, panels and clinics by Mr. White and include his own oral history over three days.
