Adjudication

One of the primary goals of the BIG BAND JAM! is to provide non-competitive applied jazz education for young and old musicians alike. One component of this style of instruction is adjudication by competent jazz instructors in accordance with guidelines established by The National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Our intent is to elevate the musicians’ understanding and ability by combining performance with instructive critique. This approach is unique because it is not a competitively driven process nor does it necessarily generate awards recipients.

Ensembles that wish to participate must register with festival organizers by submitting an audio/video sample of performance to the postal address below or through a qualifying Web link. In exchange for registration, each ensemble that is accepted will receive a complementary big band chart from our distinguished jazz education partner Alfred Music Publishing. These charts are intended for use by the ensemble during their impending BIG BAND JAM! appearance. Middle school bands will receive a chart suited to their difficulty level and high school ensembles will receive a chart corresponding to their skill level selected by an Alfred Music Publishing representative. Acceptance to the festival shall occur on a “first come, first served” basis with a deadline of no later than December 31st. Audio/video submissions will be retained by the festival organizers who reserve the right to use these recordings to promote the BIG BAND JAM!.

All daytime big band performances, clinics, and adjudication will occur on the plaza in Pershing Park, which is located along Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House. Public transportation access is via the Metro Center MetroRail Station (street elevator is located at 12th & G exit). Additional inquiries can be made here: Contact Us.
